Story and theme this game

Postby TheOtherChris » Sun Apr 03, 2011 12:08 pm

Every game needs some kind of story and theme, even if it's just a space marine in Hell or a collection of action heroes in a battle royale for no apparent reason.

I have one idea (mentioned in the animation thread) for the setting: Alternate present/future, with a continuing Cold War with west vs east, Reagan era heroes vs Ivan Drago in the space age of 2010's. Proxy battles in Asia, deniable ops, space hotels etc. with plenty of room for robberies and such aswell.

This would allow us to have both classic Cold War 80's and 90's weapons (which everyone keeps calling stylish), present tech for the tacticool and future tech maps that shows off the engine in the same bag. Ofcourse, the Cold War is the next big thing that's gonna be over-exposed (it got a headstart with BF:Vietnam but didn't catch on until COD:Blops and now we have Magicka: Vietnam...), just like we've had the WW2 trend, then Modern Warfare and now recently near-future Warfare. So we'll have to choose how to approach that, maybe it's jumping the bandwagon but it's just one idea.

1700s Earth (various places around the planet). A rogue team of ninja robots transported back through time by the evil warlord Steve Jobs to kill the ancestors of all who have worked at Microsoft. Microsoft has sent back it's own team of psycho ex-marine MS tech support stapler hoarders, headed by Steve Ballmer.

idk lol

I honestly don't think we need a story. TS never had a story, and it was great because it was just straight forward action. I imagine the same thing for this game.

If we must though, having an over-arching story would not fit with the variety of characters we're likely to have in this game, therefore I propose that each map has a small story as to why all these killers are meeting here of al places and trying to kill each other. Like TS_kissmeyerbasic - "We suspect a person of interest is currently at his office. Enter the building and try to find him, bt be warned, other parties may also be after him."

Something like that so we just have to explain the encounter.

each map should have its own backstory or reference, and that's about it.

An overall story should have zero specifics. Every map should just be like a movie a set piece.

although, Tilarons idea seems kind of awesome.

If the stories were diverse enough, it'd have a nice Timesplitters feeling (ranging from horror and 70's to modern warfare and ww2... this game doesn't need to go that overboard with the themes though).

Overall the themes should be spread out like a contract or case file type loading screen, list the map, objectives, and whatnot.

I'm just voting my support for no official story. I like ^^^^ though and I think that from a stylistic pov that kind of map/gametype based plot makes so much more sense and can even be comedic and fun on its own merits.

I vote for no story, and no set theme. I'd love to see every map represent a different action movie style. get your hard boiled hospital, your terminator 2 steel mill, your commando villa, your heat city streets, your the killer church, and your mad max post-apoc town. stuff like that.
Fuck this shit, I'm going to bed.

WHAT
WHY DO I NEED STORY
I'M SHOOTIN NIGGAS
THAT'S ALL THE STORY I NEED

ProTip: show
But yeah I think the same way The Specialists didn't really have a story, this game shouldn't either. The theme should be the same as TS was: Action Movies. Period. If it had action in it and was a movie, then it fits the theme.

I would love some background info for the maps though. Makes the game look a little more pr0.

So it looks like most people are in favor of just having a blurb explaining the theme of each individual map on the loading screen.

Why not have a thread for map suggestions?

Thought: the little loading screen blurb can be a "police report" describing what "happened" on the map. The screenshots of the map can be "crime scene photos."
