Character Model WIP

Postby techmage » Mon Dec 31, 2012 3:47 am

Greetings, I am an old modder from the HL1 era days and specialists was always my favorite DM FPS game. I also enjoy sculpting things in zbrush periodically, and believe I am good enough for someone to benefit from it. So I have agreed to sculpt some things for Vino that head in the direction of a double action player model.

Anyways, I've been working on a player model and what I've put together thus far can be seen here:

I fiddled around with things a bit and stumbled on that 'look' which I liked and felt resonated with the whole double action, stylish, slightly comical, 'fun', action movie cliche type thing. The face is fairly stylized it is semi-realistic, but verges on an anime style. Then I am thinking clothes should be fancy and slightly over the top styled. In this case, I have a suit, tie and fancy sport coat roughed out for clothing.

Thoughts? I am going to slowly chipping away at this over time so, posting lots of incremental updates, so anything that gets posted will get taken into account.

I'd also like this thread to be a discussion for this proposed 'stylized / anime-esque' type face, and the prospect of characters wearing fancy high styled clothes. Because atleast for me thats what I am seeing for this game, the first image that actually came to mind for me for an ideal character was Spike Spiegel. Although this character I realized (post-respect) actually kind of came out like the white haired guy from ghost in the shell. I've been going with the name 'Brunt' or 'Bulk'. I think having one character who is kind of large, bulky and manly like this would be good. The next character I do would probably be much more slender and 'sauve'. Then after that I was thinking a female.

Jiggle bones will sort that out, can be used for trench coats and dusters too.

Comin out nicely bro, and yes the only thing that looks odd is the waist but can't wait to see it all textured and finished, keep it up.

Do you think this profile looks a lot like Wish? Same length jacket and pants and so on. Can we do anything to diverge their profiles?

I'm no character artist myself but the face look a bit off. Can't really tell from the pic cause it's so small. But the eyes look wrong. What's your ref?
Might want to separate the belt from the body also, because now it looks pretty obviously "melted together" with the jacket. Should still bake it as one on the low poly, but just so you get a cleaner edge where belt meets jacket.

I agree the belt doesn't look as fabulous in the sculpt as it could if it were a seperate object, but really once its all baked down I don't think you'll be able tell. There is actually more resolution in that sculpt than there will be pixels to bake details into. So alot of that fine detail will get blurred out.

As for the face, if you look at the very first pic you can see the face up close...

It's a kind of odd stylized face, I was partially trying to make it a bit anime-esque, like the guy from ghost in the shell, but its open for discussion. I've been thinking about how to best do this process of making something to appease everyone instincts on what this should be, but also not give up to much control to the point everyone gets fighting and trying to pull it every which way. You know if 12 people try to design a car it's going to get pretty messy. I was chatting with vino before and we both kind of agreed that a sort of comical stylized look to characters was suiting for the game, which is where I have been aiming to take things, the initial style that popped into my head for this game was almost sort of Cowboy Bebop-ish. Again though, this is open for discussion. However keep in mind given the small amount of time there is to work on this, their can't be alot of back and forth, and really version one might be coming out more like a 'jam session' than something super refined, but the nonetheless I would appreciate if everyone typed up everything they can possibly think of in relation to any ideas about visual direction. I will take it all into account. Also posting any photos would be nice.

As far as this 'Brunt' character goes (thats the name that popped into my head) I am going to leave it alone for now I think and get onto sculpting the concept of the cop character, unless anyone else has any objections to that. The brunt character I just kind of pulled out of nowhere after chatting with vino for an hour, with no direction other than what popped into my head, and that character first popped into my head. But from now I think you guys should all be feeding me a little bit of direction. So I am going to do the cop character in the concept sketch. If you guys could then gather some photos or idea for a third character, or anything to further refine the brunt character, and then post it that would be cool.

I'd be true to myself and call him Botto.

I know I'm not the only one thinking it.
